PRESIDENT'S REPORT FOR THE COUNCIL YEAR 1998/1999
While Hong Kong has experienced a rough economy for the past year, with God's blessing and the efforts and contributions of the Council Members, the business of the St. Louis Old Boys' Association Limited (¡§SLOBA¡¨) has been smooth and satisfactory under the St. Louis spirit.
During the year four Council Meetings and one Investment Committee Meeting were held. The number of members as at 30th November 1999 is 2,809.
To facilitate the contact of old boys, SLOBA is continuing the ¡§Search for Schoolmate Service¡¨. Any old boy could fax his name and contact number to the Administrator who would pass on the same to the named schoolmate for reply. However, no information of the member list will be released.
Two Council Members attended the Educative Pastoral Committee Core Workshop of the School for setting the Mission Statement of St. Louis School in January and March 1999. The Workshop was attended by teachers, Parents and Teachers Association members and Council Members of SLOBA with Rev. Fr. Simon Lam taking the chair. All those attending the Workshop enthusiastically and freely expressed and discussed what they thought the mission of St. Louis School should be. A Mission Statement of St. Louis School was prepared after summing up all the ideas.
On 21st March 1999, the Council Members participated in the Grand Opening of the Multi-media Language Laboratory and Fund Raising Walkathon for the same. The event was well attended and turned our to be a great success. However, the Multi-media Language Laboratory requires lots of resources to keep it going and I would like to take this opportunity to appeal to the old boys for your donation to the Laboratory.
On 19th October 1999, I have the honour of being invited as the Guest of Honour for the Sports Day of St. Louis School in my capacity as the President of SLOBA. While watching the athletes competing on the field I had not forgotten to appeal to those leaving school soon to join SLOBA.
Mr. Thomas Leung, the Welfare Officer, has carried out his duty as Advisor of the St. Louis Youth Club diligently. With his guidance and support, the planning, organizing ability and performance of the St. Louis Youth Club has well improved.
Following the custom, donations were made to St. Louis School, the Don Bosco Boys Club and SLOBA (Sydney). SLOBA also sponsored reunion gatherings of graduates in celebrating their special anniversary. Those overseas are not forgotten and SLOBA is maintaining contact with SLOBA (Sydney) and SLOBA (Canada).
The activities of SLOBA during the year 1998/1999 are as follows :
25th November 1998
A Golf Tournament for raising funds for the Multi-media Language Laboratory was held at the South Course Kau Sai Chau Public Golf Course with Dr. Laurence Wan as Convenor of the event. Under his able leadership, the event was well attended and raised about HK$100,000 for the Multi-media Language Laboratory.
1st March 1999

18th October 1999
¡§Home Coming Day¡¨ was attended by about 170 old boys and their family members. Soccer matches were organized for those coming back to school. The St. Louis Youth Club also set up game stalls for the children of the old boys with lots of prizes donated by old boys. SLOBA had also prepared T-shirts with ¡§St. Louis School¡¨ embroiled thereon as souvenir making sure nobody left empty handed. The Multi-media Language Laboratory was also opened for the visitors to have a hand on the computers to try the new technology.
4th November 1999
The Rev. Fr. Foster returned to Hong Kong to join the 40 th Anniversary Reunion Dinner of the 1959 Graduates and he stayed in Hong Kong from 29th October 1999 to 24th November 1999. A reception dinner party was organized by SLOBA attended by the Council Members and the past Presidents.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Rev. Fr. Simon Lam for his advice and guidance to SLOBA during the year. Moreover, I am most grateful for the advice, assistance, input and efforts of the fellow council members without which the business of SLOBA for the year would not be so smooth and satisfactory. I am sure with St. Louis spirit of the council members of SLOBA in future SLOBA will be more successful and prosperous.
