PRESIDENT'S REPORT FOR THE COUNCIL YEAR 1999/2000

The Year of Dragon is a vibrant year and the Council Members of St. Louis Old Boys' Association Limited (“SLOBA”) also have a busy schedule. With the help of God and the dedication of the Council Members the business of SLOBA in the past year has been concluded in the best St. Louis spirit.

During the past year 6 council Meetings and numerous Ball Organizing Committee Meetings have been held. As at the 31st day of December 2000 the number of members of SLOBA is 3,001.

To keep up with time, SLOBA has set up its own web page www.sloba.org to facilitate members around the world to have first hand information of the current events of SLOBA. The same also helps old boys to get in touch with other schoolmates in addition to the existing “Search for Schoolmate Service”. I cordially appeal to all the old boys for your inputs and assistance to make the web page more attractive and informative.

In October, 2000 SLOBA together with the Wing Lung Bank Limited launched the SLOBA Visa Card. The purpose of this Visa Card is to raise fund for enhancement of the school facilities to which no subsidize can be obtained from the Education Department. Mr. Michael Wu, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Wing Lung Bank Limited and also a senior old boy of St. Louis School, has granted SLOBA very favourable for the SLOBA Visa Card. I would like to take this opportunity to appeal to you, the old boys of St. Louis School, to apply for the SLOBA Visa Card and use it so that you can help the School at no costs to you.

In Year 2000 a group of old boys has set up “The Father Deane Trust Fund” for the purpose of catering for extra care to the beloved Rev. Fr. Deane in the last chapter of his life. The first board of governors of The Father Deane Trust Fund consists of Wan Ho Yue Laurence, Liu Yee Man John, Chu Ka Kun Vincent, Ko Sze Ho Peter, Chan Ho Yin Graham, Hong Koon Chung Albert, Leung Ka Kui Johnny and Ha Kee Choy Eugene. SLOBA is taking the role of administrator and for those who would like to contribute to The Father Deane Trust Fund please draw your cheque in favour of “St. Louis Old Boys' Association Limited”.

Mr. Thomas Leung, the Welfare Officer, continued his work of Advisor to the St. Louis Youth Club. Under his guidance the support, the activities of St. Louis Youth Club in the past year have been smooth and satisfactory.

Following the good deeds set down by my pre-decessors, SLOBA continued to make donations to St. Louis School and the Don Bosco Boys Club and sponsor reunion of graduates in celebrating their special anniversary.

SLOBA also maintains contact with SLOBA (Sydney) and SLOBA (Canada).

The Millennium Ball of SLOBA was held on the 28th day of October 2000 at the Grand Ballroom of the Conrad Hotel. The guest of honour of the evening was Mr. Michael Wu, the Chairman of the board of directors of Wing Lung Bank Limited. The SLOBA Visa Card launch ceremony was held during the Ball. The Millennium Ball was well attended with 240 people and those attending had a wonderful evening.

The activities of SLOBA during the year 1999/2000 are as follows :

12th December 1999

The Second SLOBA Golf Tournament was held at Palm Island Golf Club ( 棕櫚島高爾夫球會 ) with Dr. Laurence Wan as the Chairman of the Organizing Committee. Those participating in the Tournament had a wonderful game and relaxing time.

3rd March 2000

The Millennium Spring Dinner was held at Louis Steak House. The change of venue and cuisine was met with great enthusiasm and the Millennium Spring Dinner was very well attended.

8th October 2000

“Home Coming Day” was well attended by old boys and their family members. Soccer matches were organized for those coming back to school and who dared to test their strength. Game stalls were set up by St. Louis Youth Club with lots of prizes making sure that no child of the old boys coming back with his parents would leave empty-handed. As usual, the Multi-media Language Laboratory, which opened for the visitors, was one of the high lights of the Home Coming Day.

30th November to 4th December 2000

The Seventh Congress of Salesian Past Pupils of St. John Bosco which was held once every four year with the aim to enhance the communication and the exchange of ideas in the promotion of the activities of Don Bosco past pupils in the Asia-Australian regions with focus on the spreading of the teachings of Don Bosco was held in Bangkok, Thailand at Fortune Hotel from 30th November 2000 to 4th December 2000. SLOBA sponsored the expenses of Rev. Fr. Simon Lam and 2 Form 6 students to attend the event. Mr. Peter Ko leading the team of 5 including Mr. Anthony Liu, Rev. Fr. Simon Lam and the 2 Form 6 students attended the event.

Rev. Fr. Simon Lam has given valuable advice and guidance to SLOBA during the past year to which I am most grateful. The advice, assistance, input and efforts of the fellow Council Members are also indispensable. I wish to take this opportunity to thank Rev. Fr. Simon Lam any my fellow Council Members for all they have done which brings about a fruitful year. My best wishes for SLOBA with more successful and prosperous years to come.
